Nurul Amin Shah Alam Found Dead in Buffalo After Release by U.S. Border Patrol
Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a 56-year-old Rohingya refugee who was almost blind and didn’t know English, has been found dead on a street in Buffalo, New York, after being released into the cold by the U.S. Border Patrol. Shah Alam had been missing since February 19, when federal agents left him off at a coffee shop kilometers away from his home after being released from county jail on a misdemeanor plea bargain. Although Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that he didn’t display any signs of distress and accepted a “courtesy ride” to a safe place, Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan criticized the agency’s behavior as “unprofessional and inhumane.” The family, who had moved to the U.S. only a year ago to escape persecution in Myanmar, reported that they were never informed of his release, which resulted in the lost man wandering around on a cold winter night.
